Hyaluronic acid (HA) is found naturally throughout the body, with the highest concentration found in the joints, eyes and skin. In the skin, HA attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated. This, however, decreases as we age and as our skin becomes thinner.

This loss of volume may lead to a sunken or saggy appearance of the face. Injectable HA is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and facial folds. These effects may be seen immediately, however outcomes and longevity varies from patient to patient and also depends on the location of the injection. Results may vary from six months to 24 months depending on these factors.

Blood thinners should be stopped two weeks prior to receiving dermal filler injections. In addition to this, if you are prone to cold sores (herpes simplex viral infection) and you are planning on having dermal fillers to your lips, you should be prescribed prophylactic antivirals in the form of Valacyclovir 500mg BD two days before and for three days after you receive dermal filler injections to your lips. You cannot receive dermal fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are on current immunosuppressive therapy.
